Here’s how to order iced coffee at Starbucks:

Simply ask the barista for a classic or unsweetened cup of Starbucks iced coffee.

Note that their iced coffee contains lots of sugar in the form of sugar water, even if nothing suggests it.

If you want to order plain Starbucks iced coffee without any sugar, make sure to ask for “no classic syrup”.

Apart from that, you can add different flavors and toppings to your original Starbucks Iced Coffee or alternatively you can even order their cold brew drink.

Still, ordering at Starbucks can be a challenge for those of us who aren’t regular customers or are trying out a new variety from their menu for the first time.

To help you get the most out of your next visit to Starbucks, in this article I’ll cover:

  • The most practical ways to order iced coffee at Starbucks
  • What are the different cup sizes that they offer

3 Easy Ways to Order Iced Coffee at Starbucks

If you’re looking for some help with placing your iced coffee orders at Starbucks, look no further.

We have compiled a list of methods you can use to order iced coffee at Starbucks, the right way.

1. Order Basic Iced Coffee and Modify It

The most straightforward and logical approach when you arrive at Starbucks is to simply order a classic iced coffee.

Iced coffee contains two essential ingredients: ice and freshly-brewed coffee.

While ice and coffee make for a great combination on their own, going to a place like Starbucks allows you to adjust and modify your iced coffee to better suit your taste!

So, the next time you head over to your local Starbucks, make sure to add a custom flair to the dynamic ice-coffee duo!

Make Sure To Let Your Barista Know That You Want To Spice Up Your Iced Coffee!

Once you’ve chosen your iced coffee base, ask your barista to add some cream, sugar or other elements to modify your drink.

This customization process allows you to create an iced coffee combo that’s suited to your personal taste.

You can request specific amounts of cream and sugar and even add some extra flavors so don’t hesitate to experiment.

For instance – if you’re someone who’s just settling in for their first cup of the day and would like a strong wake-me-up, why not ask for an espresso shot?

Starbucks baristas are remarkably accommodating and will be happy to add a shot or two of espresso, as you like it.

Typical iced coffees do not contain extra espresso, so asking for an extra shot is an excellent idea.

2. Opt For a Cold Brew Coffee

But you can also choose to order cold brew as another type of iced java.

Cold brew coffee drinks can be considered a close cousin to traditional iced coffee.

There is one major difference between the two though, which accounts for significant textural and flavor variations.

Where traditional iced coffee is brewed hot and then poured over ice, cold brew coffee is brewed using cold or room temperature water.

Although cold brew coffee is still a relatively newer addition to the Starbucks menu, it has quite a few flavors and variations, such as:

  • Nitro Cold Brew (with or w/o sweet cream)
  • Cold Brew with Cold Foam
  • Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew
  • Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew
  • Cold Brew with Cascara Cold Foam

Still, many coffee aficionados feel like their iced coffee is smoother and has a deeper, richer taste when brewed with cold (as opposed to hot) water.

3. Choose a Flavored Iced Coffee

Ordering a flavored iced coffee is a great idea if you are bored with the classic iced coffee recipe courtesy of Starbucks.

By getting yourself a flavored iced coffee you’ll have a refreshing and tasty treat.

The variety at Starbucks is impressive and you’re bound to find a flavor that suits your personal taste.

Popular options include best-sellers like the:

  • Iced Pumpkin Spice Latte (a classic holiday drink)
  • Gingerbread Latte (a particularly popular drink around Christmas time)

Basically, pre-made flavored iced coffees are great options for those of us who don’t want to spend time flavoring the coffee we order.

This way you can still enjoy something that tastes amazing, yet different but without doing all the hard work yourself.

How to order iced coffee at Starbucks, different cup sizes

The Different Cup Sizes that Starbucks Offers

Starbucks packages its coffees in four different quantities.

You can choose any one of the following cup sizes when ordering your iced coffee:

  • Tall – 12 ounces (340 grams)
  • Grande – 16 ounces (450 grams)
  • Venti – 24 ounces (680 grams)
  • Trenta – 31 ounces (880 grams)

This is the very first thing you’ll need to make your mind on so that your barista can grab the right cup before making your coffee.

Remember that iced coffee generally contains ice, which means that there’s less room for the actual coffee!

Hence, most people tend to go with larger cup sizes to compensate for the less amount of coffee in the cup due to all the ice.

That’s something essential to keep in mind when deciding on cup size if you don’t want a cup that’s brimming with ice and not a lot of coffee.

It is also helpful to decide what quantity you’d like to order before you get in the line for ordering a cup of Joe.

This will help the barista and will speed up your order, ultimately helping out the customers in the line behind you, too.

Alternative: Order Iced Starbucks Coffee Online

You can order iced Starbucks coffee online since Starbucks has a new option that lets you place your order beforehand through the internet.

All you need to do is download the Starbucks app for iPhone or Android on your smartphone.

And you can choose between several payment methods:

  • Pay with Starbucks “stars” on behalf of their Loyalty Programmen (all app users are automatically enrolled onto)
  • Pay with your Debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay account.

Ordering through the app is extremely easy and will save you the hassle of standing in line if you’re short on time!

All you need to do is choose your pickup location, place an order, pay online and go pick up your freshly-made drink when it’s ready.

Don’t worry – the app will give you an estimated pick-up time so you can schedule your stop accordingly!

How to Make Your Starbucks Coffee Less Bitter

You can achieve this by adding vanilla cream to your coffee.

Starbucks offers sweet vanilla cream as an optional add-on, which will dilute your drink but it’ll also make it sweeter and more mellow.

Thus, you can ask your barista to add it to your cup of coffee if you’d like a smoother-tasting coffee with a vanilla tinge.

This is a smart option for those of you who enjoy the taste of coffee but would still prefer to reduce the overall bitterness of the drink.

Increasing the Coffee in Your Starbucks Drink

To make sure that you have enough coffee in your cup, ask your barista to reduce the amount of ice in your drink.

As a result, they’ll end up adding more coffee so you’ll have more coffee and less ice in your cup!

This means that your drink won’t be as diluted, which means that it’ll also be stronger.

That’s because iced coffee is essentially part ice, part coffee.

And since ice (or ice cubes) are a staple ingredient in such drinks, there tends to be more than an average amount of coffee inside in comparison to a regular cup of Joe.

This can significantly reduce the amount of coffee, which is why most customers end up ordering a larger cup!

But larger cups cost more and are not a smart option for when you’re on a budget so you just have to play smart by asking the barista to put less ice in your cup.

Did somebody say coffee? Two shots of espresso for me, thanks. Oh, nevermind - I'm Simon, nice to e-meet you, dear CoffeeLifior! I like to write, drink coffee and I believe in Jesus. Highly-caffeinated drinks are my thing, but you can occasionally see me sip on decaf (my wife never finishes her coffee). Speaking of which, I'm off to grab another cup of caffeinated goodness now, laters!

    1. Hi Darlene and welcome to CL!

There’s no butter pecan iced coffee on the regular Starbucks menu.

However, here’s how to order a Butter Pecan Ice Cream Frappuccino at Starbucks by selecting your own ingredients:

      1. Order a Grande Cafe Vanilla Frappuccino with Almond Milk.
      2. Ask for 2 pumps of hazelnut flavor.
      3. Ask for a caramel crunch topping.

This way you’ll have your own butter pecan iced coffee at Starbucks, even though they don’t officially have it on their menu.

Let me know how that went.

      Cheers and God bless,

      — Simon

    1. Hello and welcome to CL!

The current price for a Tall iced Mocha Frappuccino at Starbucks is $3.95, while a Grande will cost you $4.45.

      Hope this helps.

This article is incorrect. Starbucks iced coffee is NOT just coffee and ice, as I thought I have been ordering and drinking from them for many years. Starbucks iced coffee contains a lot of sugar – yes, that’s right, they add sugar water to their iced coffee – WITHOUT TELLING YOU!

I just found this out yesterday, when I was asked if I wanted Classic or unsweetened. It appears you have to ask for “No Classic syrup” to get just plain iced coffee. I asked the barista when Starbucks started adding sugar to its coffee, and he told me they always did it, I just didn’t notice. I told him I doubted that, as I’d been drinking plain iced coffee for years.

Well, I googled it and found out that he is correct – Starbucks has been adding lots of sugar to my iced coffee all these years, and I had NO idea. The coffee is bitter, and I add milk, which is itself somewhat sweet, so I didn’t notice the extra sugar. Sometimes the iced coffee tasted a bit off – not as good as iced coffee at home – but I figured that was because they don’t use the organic, grass-fed, quality milk I buy, or it had picked up flavors from sitting in the fridge too long. Nope, it was sugar syrup all along!

I had often read that Starbucks drinks are very unhealthy, but I thought I was avoiding this by only ordering hot or iced coffee. Apparently that is NOT what I have been getting. (Years ago, when Starbucks first spread across the U.S. in the mid-90s, I used to order lattes, which apparently also had, and have, lots of sugar in them, unbeknownst to me – to me, a latte is coffee and milk. Not at Starbucks apparently!) But for decades I have just ordered hot or iced coffee, thinking I was getting nothing added but whatever milk I added myself, or asked to be added. Nope, nope, nope!

I am so angry about this, this sneaking sugar into a iced coffee when you do not expect it to have sugar in it (you think are are ordering chilled coffee over ice), that I will never, ever order anything from Starbucks again!

    1. Hi there and welcome!

Thank you for the truly helpful insight – I’ll incorporate this information into the article to warn others that Starbucks ‘ iced coffee is actually jam-packed with sugar.

That’s really sneaky indeed and definitely not something that should be hidden from clients.

Imagine that you’re on a keto diet and all of a sudden you realize that you keep getting out of ketosis due to your favorite iced coffee containing sugar syrup.

      Cheers and God bless,

      — Simon
